Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an attempt to return to the classic sextet format and a more consistent, stronger effort with a harder edge. The more edgy sound of the album was a reflection of the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity on drums, and a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard playing was as well more refined, more precise, and less derivative on earlier efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live performance that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. A new studio album was released a few months later, and the group embarked on a long-distance tour to promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

The group also had a guest appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
